A Sun Stalker

I was flicking through some photos today and came across a few great shots of some sunflowers that I had taken while holidaying in Spain. Driving down the highway in our little convertible, roof down, the sun on our faces we happened to come across field after field of these spectacular yellow flowers. Seriously, how can you not be in awe of its bright sunny face?

Did you know that one of the special characteristics of sunflowers is that the flowering heads track the movement of the sun as it moves across the sky? Known as heliotropism or solar tracking. (Natures idea of a morning person!) Every morning the flowers rise from their random nightly positions and face the new dawn in anticipation of fully engaging the warmth of the sun. So determined is this glorious sun stalker to maximise the suns rays, it never lacks the energy required for optimal growth and development.

It made me think of how God reveals to us through nature how we too can engage with his Son. May we too rise to embrace a new day and intentionally encounter the warmth of his son. May our hearts be fully engaged and our souls thoroughly captivated as we stand in his glory and grace.

'May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.'

A traditional Gaelic blessing

I love sunflowers. We've grown them before and my kids love them. Trader Joes was selling some -- and I almost put them in my cart, but the daffodils made it first. Again.

Have a great day!

Another great post about the beauty of nature. I love sunflowers! Growing up in Ghana, they were always a sight to see. How could one not feel blessed to witness such beauty? I did not know about the relationship between sunflowers and the sun though so thank you for that little tidbit. Keep them coming.

I love sunflowers and knew about the sun tracking, but this parallel with our spiritual journeys is one that I had not thought of before. Wonderful.

I remember seein such fields in France. Only I was driving with 40 highschool students in a coach. Still the flowers were beautiful and the truth of God still true. :-)

Fondly,
Glenda
